About

Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) holds the distinction of being Illinois' only collegiate helicopter training program, offering FAA Part 141 approved ground, simulator, and flight training through a partnership with Ideal Aviation at St. Louis Downtown Airport (KCPS). The program provides students with multiple aviation career pathways, from a one-semester private pilot certificate to a two-year Associate degree designed to transfer to four-year programs.

SWIC's partnership with Ideal Aviation—itself a Part 141 school certificate holder—provides students with access to a full complement of helicopter and fixed-wing training at KCPS, one of the most active general aviation airports in the St. Louis metropolitan area. This arrangement gives SWIC students the academic rigor of a community college degree program combined with the operational professionalism of a dedicated flight school environment. The proximity to St. Louis Lambert International Airport also exposes students to Class Bravo airspace procedures throughout their training.

SWIC's aviation program has a partnership agreement with Southern Illinois University (SIU) that allows graduates to transfer seamlessly into SIU's professional aviation program for a four-year degree. This articulation agreement creates a clearly defined pathway from SWIC to SIU and beyond, including access to SIU's airline and corporate aviation career networks. The program offers certificates and ratings from Private Pilot and Instrument through Commercial, Multi-Engine, and all flight instructor certificates.
