About

Iowa Lakes Community College has earned national recognition as the number one aviation community college in the United States according to Flying Magazine, a distinction reflecting the program's exceptional instruction quality, student outcomes, and facilities. Operating from Estherville Municipal Airport (KEST)—just five minutes from the main campus—the program provides students with immediate, daily access to a fleet of nine aircraft and a hands-on learning environment.

The Aviation and Airport Management AAS degree program at Iowa Lakes is fully Part 141 certified, allowing students to complete their Private, Instrument, Commercial, and Multi-Engine certificates with greater efficiency than the Part 61 minimum. The fleet includes Cessna 172s for primary training, Piper Arrows and Beechcraft Debonairs for complex and high-performance instruction, Cirrus SR20s for glass-cockpit exposure, and Piper Senecas for multi-engine ratings. A Piper Super Cub is also available for tailwheel instruction.

Iowa Lakes has recently received a $490,000 FAA grant to expand its aviation and airport management programs and extend flight training opportunities to high school students through JROTC partnerships. Chief Flight Instructor Dwayne Hoss leads the flight operations program, supported by the full faculty of Iowa Lakes Community College. Students graduate in as little as 18 months with an associate degree and a complete set of professional pilot certificates, ready to continue toward a bachelor's degree or enter the aviation workforce directly.
