AVIATION SPECIALTIES UNLIMITED INC
About
Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU) was founded in 1995 in Boise, Idaho by former AH-64 Apache pilot Mike Atwood, and has since pioneered FAA-approved night vision goggle (NVG) training for civilian, law enforcement, and military aviation operations. Over three decades, ASU has trained more than 8,000 pilots and crew members in NVG procedures—making it the most experienced NVG training provider in the United States.
ASU holds a comprehensive collection of FAA certifications that reflect the breadth of its operations: Part 135 Air Carrier, Part 133 Rotorcraft External-Load, Part 137 Agricultural Aircraft Operations, Part 141 Flight School, and Part 145 Repair Station with specialized NVG inspection and certification authority. The school operates a Bell 505 Jet Ranger X and Cessna 206 for its flight training programs, with initial private pilot training available through the Part 141 certification.
The centerpiece of ASU's operations is its FAA-approved NVG training programs for Part 135, Part 141, and Public Use (law enforcement and military) operators. The eight-hour academic curriculum covers night vision physiology, equipment operation, emergency procedures, and the operational techniques ASU has refined over two decades of specialized night operations. ASU's unique intersection of civilian flight school and specialized tactical training makes it one of the most distinctive aviation training organizations in the American West.
