Jerry "Jady" Kerby, known by the callsign "Jive," is a premier FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) based in Kinston, North Carolina. A retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Kerby's distinguished military career was highlighted by over 3,400 hours in the F-15C Eagle and his selection as the first F-4 Heritage Flight pilot. His professional foundation was established remarkably early; he soloed on his sixteenth birthday and had already amassed 4,300 flight hours and an Airline Transport Pilot certificate before beginning his military service.
With over 15,000 total flight hours in more than 75 different aircraft types, Kerby's expertise spans high-performance military jets, vintage warbirds, and experimental aircraft. He is a prominent figure in the airshow industry, performing in the "Wild Blue Rodeo" RV-8 act and competing in the Reno Air Races’ Jet Class, where he qualified at speeds exceeding 500 mph. As a DPE and Aerobatic Competency Evaluator, he specializes in practical tests for private through ATP certificates, as well as specialized jet type ratings.
Kerby is widely recognized for a rigorous safety mindset developed through years of combat operations and high-stakes civilian flight testing. His professional handling of mechanical emergencies during competitive performances underscores the calm proficiency and discipline he expects from checkride candidates. Today, he remains a pillar of the North Carolina aviation community, providing expert evaluation and specialized instruction through his company, Kerby Custom Jets.
