Derek McVicar is a distinguished Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and aviation educator based in Albany, Ohio. A graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree earned in 2011, McVicar has spent the majority of his professional career within the Russ College of Engineering and Technology’s Department of Aviation. He currently serves as the Chief Flight Instructor at the Fuller Aviation Training Center, where he leads flight operations and instructional standards for one of the most prominent collegiate flight programs in the Midwest.
With thousands of flight hours and a comprehensive suite of FAA certifications—including Commercial Single and Multi-Engine Land, CFII, and MEI—McVicar possesses the expertise required to evaluate pilots across a broad spectrum of certificates and ratings. His specialization as a DPE primarily focuses on Private, Instrument, and Commercial checkrides. Throughout his tenure, he has established a reputation for maintaining a rigorous safety culture and a high standard of airmanship, boasting a clean safety record that reflects his commitment to the safe evolution of the national airspace system. Outside of his professional duties, he is also an active member of the local community, managing a private farm in his spare time.
