Timothy Thomas Schmelzer is a highly distinguished FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and aviation educator based in the Miami Beach area. His journey in aviation began in Michigan, where he grew up immersed in his family’s cargo operation that transported freight for General Motors using radial-engine Beechcraft 18s. Schmelzer’s formal flight training took him through Michigan and Ohio before he pursued higher education at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Troy State University and a master’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, forming a robust academic and practical foundation for his career.
With over 35 years of pilot experience, Schmelzer has spent more than 25 years as a dedicated professor at the Miami Dade College Eig-Watson School of Aviation. Before transitioning to academia, he gained significant industry insight working in airline administration for Pan Am in New York until the carrier’s bankruptcy. Recognized as the 2004 FAA Flight Instructor of the Year for South Florida, he also serves as an FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) Lead Representative. As an examiner, Schmelzer is widely respected for his commitment to safety and rigorous standards, leveraging his decades of instruction to evaluate and mentor pilots navigating the complex South Florida airspace.
