Matthew Hewlett

Matthew Hewlett, based in Pleasant Grove, Utah, transitioned to aviation from a previous career as a stockbroker. His passion for flight began in 2003 while raising funds for a charity that utilized a helicopter, prompting him to start flight training at Universal Helicopters in Provo. He subsequently built a career in rotorcraft aviation, logging over 10,000 hours of flight instruction given and earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management. Today, Hewlett is an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) appointed through the Salt Lake City Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). He is a helicopter-only examiner and does not conduct airplane checkrides; his examining authority covers Private, Commercial, Instrument, ATP, and Flight Instructor certificates specifically for helicopter applicants. At Universal Helicopters, Hewlett serves as the Authorized Chief Instructor for Part 141 courses, Station Manager for the Part 145 Repair Station, and is a member of the Robinson and Bell Sales Department, where he manages sales, delivery, and turbine transitions for Robinson R22, R44, R66, and Bell 505 models. He is also SFAR 73 qualified to instruct and examine in Robinson R-22 and R-44 helicopters. Since 2010, Hewlett has worked as the sole helicopter pilot for Cirque Lodge, piloting an Airbus EC130 B4 for experiential therapy flights over the southern Wasatch Range. He has been married since 1998, has five children and three grandchildren, and spends his personal time fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles, and taking road trips.
