Larry Wayne Gross is a distinguished pillar of the Indiana aviation community, currently serving as a Professor Emeritus at Purdue University and an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). Based in West Lafayette, Gross is recognized as the longest-serving DPE in Indiana, having administered more than 7,100 checkrides since his appointment in 1973. His legacy at Purdue University spans 54 years, including 17 years as the Director of Flight Training. In 2024, his immense contributions were officially honored with an induction into the Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame, solidifying his status as a premier figure in pilot evaluation and mentorship.
Gross possesses extensive flight experience as an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) with a DC-3 type rating and has been honored with the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for 50 years of accident-free flying. His professional background includes a tenure as a co-pilot for Ozark Airlines and a specialized expertise in mountain flying instruction. Holding a Master’s degree in counseling, Gross combines technical flight proficiency with a unique pedagogical perspective. He remains one of the most respected examiners in the nation, specializing in single and multi-engine land aircraft while maintaining an unyielding commitment to aviation safety and regulatory excellence.
