In 2018, the Federal Aviation Administration recognized Johnny Lee Preston with the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, confirming a piloting career of over fifty consecutive years of safe flight operations beginning by at least 1968. Based in Oronogo, Missouri, Preston serves the Joplin region as an active Designated Pilot Examiner operating out of Joplin Regional Airport (KJLN). His FAA certifications on record include private, commercial, and instrument ratings for single-engine land airplanes. In addition to his DPE duties, Preston serves as a FAASTeam Representative for the region, bringing regulatory expertise in Part 61, Part 141, and Part 135 operations. A long-term resident of Jasper County, he is the son of the late World War II veteran Joe Lee Preston and was married to the late Rhonda Jo Preston for twenty years.
