James Michael "Jim" Blackburn is a highly experienced FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) based at the Asheville Regional Airport in Fletcher, North Carolina. His aviation journey began at the age of 14, and he eventually dedicated 23 years of service to the United States Marine Corps as a Harrier pilot. After retiring from the military, Blackburn transitioned his skills to general aviation, serving as both an Assistant Chief and Chief Flight Instructor for a prominent local Part 141 flight school. This transition underscores his deep-rooted commitment to foundational flight training and the mentorship of new pilots.
Blackburn has logged significant flight time across more than 40 different aircraft makes and models, ranging from light trainers like the Cessna 150 to high-performance military jets like the Super Hornet. Currently, he serves as a lead examiner with Pitch Vy, where he is authorized to conduct practical tests for Private, Instrument, and Commercial pilot certifications in both single-engine and multi-engine land airplanes.
