James Eric Brannan, commonly known as Jim, is a highly distinguished FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and the founder of JB Aeronautics in Fresno, California. With an aviation career spanning more than 50 years, Brannan has been a cornerstone of the Central Valley’s flight training community. He has served as a DPE for the Fresno Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) since March 1978, making him one of the most experienced examiners in the region. His extensive background includes 40 years of owning and operating a large FAA-approved flight school, where he honed his expertise in FAR Part 141 operations and flight instructor standardization.
Brannan’s instructional and evaluation expertise covers a broad spectrum of certifications, including Private, Commercial, Instrument, and Multi-Engine ratings, as well as initial Flight Instructor (CFI/CFII/MEI) certificates. He is also authorized to issue military competency certificates and commercial drone licenses. Throughout his decades of service, Brannan has maintained an impeccable safety record, emphasizing a thorough and fair evaluation process that prioritizes risk management and pilot proficiency. Today, he remains dedicated to mentoring students and providing high-quality practical tests, ensuring every pilot he certifies meets the rigorous safety standards of the National Airspace System.
