Gerard "Gerry" F. Ventrella is a legendary Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and military veteran based in the Chicago region. His aviation career began in 1966 as a helicopter mechanic before he transitioned to flight school, eventually serving as a combat pilot in Vietnam. During the conflict, he flew over 800 combat hours in the UH-1 Huey and earned numerous honors, including the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. Ventrella later served as an FAA inspector and corporate pilot before being recalled to active duty in 2007 to fly reconnaissance missions in Iraq for Task Force ODIN. Outside of the cockpit, he holds a degree in music, showcasing a multifaceted background that informs his disciplined approach to aviation.
With over 50 years of experience as an examiner, Ventrella has conducted thousands of checkrides and is a pillar of the Chicago aviation community. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate and is a veteran CFI, CFII, and MEI with expertise in both rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft. Inducted into the Military Aviation Hall of Fame of Illinois, he is frequently sought after for his encyclopedic knowledge and focus on pilot proficiency. As a DPE, he specializes in Private, Commercial, and Instructor certifications, emphasizing a safety-first mindset and the critical importance of recurrent training to maintain flight excellence.
