Ernest "Ernie" Gerard Pitts is a highly distinguished FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) based at San Bernardino International Airport (KSBD). With an aviation career spanning over 40 years, Pitts began his journey in the United States Air Force, where he first learned to fly. Following his military service, he transitioned into a long and successful career in commercial aviation, eventually retiring as a Captain from a major airline. During his tenure, he accumulated over 13,500 total flight hours, including 8,300 hours specifically in Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft, as well as 2,500 hours in large multi-engine turboprops.
In addition to his heavy jet experience, Pitts has dedicated more than 2,200 hours to flight instruction in light aircraft and has served as a DPE for over a decade. He has conducted more than 1,200 practical exams, specializing in Private Pilot, Commercial, and Instrument ratings. Known for his safety-centric mindset and professional demeanor, Pitts maintains a clean operational record and focuses on putting candidates at ease during their checkrides. His extensive background in general aviation, regional airlines, and major carriers allows him to provide a comprehensive and fair evaluation of every pilot candidate.
