Charles Welden

Charles "Chuck" Welden is a highly versatile FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and the founder of WaterWings Seaplane School, based primarily in Alexander City and Calera, Alabama. Welden’s aviation journey began at age 16, inspired by watching seaplanes on Lake Martin near his childhood home. He earned his private pilot certificate at 17 and has since accumulated over 8,000 total flight hours, with approximately 4,000 hours dedicated to instruction. His extensive credentials include Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) ratings for single and multi-engine land and sea aircraft, as well as Commercial and CFI ratings in gliders and helicopters.

Before transitioning fully into aviation leadership, Welden enjoyed a successful career in the technology sector, developing specialized software for television stations and founding an IT support firm. This professional background informs his disciplined yet approachable examining style. Appointed as a DPE in 2018, he specializes in checkrides for Private, Commercial, ATP, and Instrument ratings.
