Charles Edwin Schroll, also known as Dr. Chuck or Charlie Schroll, is an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner based in Marana, Arizona, who conducts Private Pilot and Flight Instructor practical tests in gliders at El Tiro Gliderport (AZ67). Schroll practiced for decades as an Emergency Medicine physician in Alabama and Arizona, following an early teaching career in math and science at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School. In 1993, he served as a volunteer on a public health field team in Bosnia with the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights. An aircraft builder, Schroll constructed the Wright Rocket (N81WT), a customized amateur-built airplane derived from a Maule M7 fuselage that earned a Plans Outstanding Workmanship plaque at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2011. He actively volunteers as a conservation pilot for LightHawk—documenting drought impacts and border wall wildlife effects, as featured in the 2023 documentary "Romeo November: A LightHawk Story"—and flies medical missions for the Flying Samaritans, which earned him the National Public Benefit Flying Award for Distinguished Volunteer Pilot in 2007. Additionally, Schroll serves as a National Park Service volunteer "Master Astronomer," hosting programs at Badlands National Park and acting as the Laser Constellation Tour Coordinator for the Grand Canyon Star Party.
